Dear Colleagues and Friends, We are pleased to announce that ODEC is launching a new writing course, Academic Writing for Publication. This 16-week online course for advanced-level learners explores writing as not only a set of specific literacy skills like building an argument, organizing ideas, and maintaining academic integrity but also as a rhetorical act. The course aims to explore and develop students’ relationship to reading and writing through the creation of a research article suitable for publication in a national or international academic journal.
FAQs about the course:
Q: What is the focus of the course?
A: The Academic Writing for Publication course is focused on just that – helping you write a research article suitable for publication. If you already have a topic of research, great! You may use it in the creation of your paper. If you don’t yet, don’t worry. There will be plenty of time to brainstorm and do research for your paper throughout the course.
Q: What will be expected of me?
A: You will be expected to consistently log into Moodle to access, complete, and submit the required reading and writing assignments designed to help you progress. You will also be expected to regularly and respectfully engage with your instructor and fellow classmates online and possibly face-to-face, as well. Lastly, you will be expected to work hard as you develop your ideas into a deliverable research paper by the end of the course.
Q: What do I need in order to attend the course?
A: As long as you are an advanced English learner, all you need is an open mind, a strong work ethic, and a willing spirit. If you already have a passion for writing, even better, but it’s not necessary. Given enough of a chance, however, you might just find yourself developing a new passion!
Q: How much time will it take to complete the course?
A: You will need to allocate at least nine hours per week for this 16-week-long course. Since the class is online, you may work anytime from anywhere, according to your schedule. There will also be the opportunity to meet face-to-face by appointment with the course facilitator once a week at the ODEC office.
Q: What kinds of technical skills are required?
A: Since this course is conducted primarily online, we expect you to be digitally literate enough to use email, navigate web pages, and browse the Internet, especially as you do research. Being able to use a word processing program and other programs like PowerPoint and Excel will also be very helpful. Any other specific technical information will be explained during orientation at the beginning of the course.
Q: What kinds of technical resources will I need?
A: You will need a personal email account and access to the Internet, as reliable a connection as possible. Having a personal computer or laptop and a means of saving your work will be even better.
Q: Q: How much does the course cost?
A: The total cost of the course is 7,200 Rs. TU faculty members and M.Phil. / Ph.D. scholars currently working on a thesis will receive a 50% discount.
Q:Q: How do I enroll in the course?
A:A: To enroll, visit ODEC’s homepage. Select the Academic Writing for Publication page and download the application form. Send the completed form to info@odectu.edu.np.
There is no fee for submitting an application.
Q: When is the deadline to apply?
A: Applications must be received by November 24. Selections will be based on your expressed interest and the content of your application. Participants will be informed of their selection.
Q: When do classes start?
A: Classes are scheduled to begin the first week of December 2019. Once selected, you will be informed by email of the program agenda. We expect you to be physically present on the first day (with a personal computer or laptop, if possible) for orientation.
Q: Who will facilitate the course?
A: Writing expert Kiri Manookin, an English Language Fellow of ODEC at TU, will facilitate the course. Ms. Manookin has extensive experience teaching academic writing in higher education institutions in the United States and in Turkey, where she also helped establish a university writing center. She is looking forward to working with course participants here in Nepal and helping them become more skillful and confident writers.
